Usually, the native resolution of DVDs is 720 x 480. If you would try encoding in that pixel count you might find you get great pictures quality, perfect DVD reproduction and still have small files sizes.
This movie really is a classic. Thanks for the upload. I'm gonna see if it's available in BluRay.
