Wipeout XL [Direct Play]

Wipeout XL a.k.a. Wipeout 2097 [Direct Play] Wipeout is the title of a series of futuristic anti-gravity racing games, originally produced by Psygnosis for the PlayStation video game console. Wipeout XL is the second game in the Wipeout series to be released. It moved the Wipeout brand forward, introducing new tracks, new craft, and new weapons such as the Quake Disruptor (which sent a ripple down the track) that became instant fan favorites. Just as in the original game, players must race across crazy tracks while driving hovercraft from the future. On top of the racing action, players need to collect weapons in order to take down their closet competitors. To cater for the increase in Wipeout players, an easier learning curve was introduced whilst keeping the difficulty at top end for the experienced gamers. Downloaded it and tested it. It was very unstable and crashed all the time so I decided to run it in Win95 compability mode. It worked fine, but when I quit playing, I got no sounds whatsoever out of my computer! Checked all the Windows sound options and tried to reboot but it didn't fix the problem. I'm now downloading my sound drivers to reinstall them, but I don't know if it's gonna work... Anyone got any good ideas? =/

Ok, now this is weird. I tried playing Wipeout again, now without the compability mode, and I got all the menu sounds/other SFX that I did when I ran it last time! But when I exit the game, my computer goes mute again! WTF is causing this?

Getting even weirder... Again, I started Wipeout. Then, just for the lulz, I went back to my desktop (with Wipeout running in the background) and started Winamp. To my amazement, it worked! So now my comp's audio works only when Wipeout is running. Would uninstalling it fix this?

Hey North Nitro, I had the same problem and found a workaround. I have no idea why this works though.
Instead of quitting through the ingame menu, alt+tab out of the game, then click it on the menu bar and close it. It might say something like program not responding, but just click end now and everything should work fine.

Try changing the location of the wipeout folder. I had it on my desktop and it crashed after the splash. Then I moved it to c:\wipeout and re-ran the reg program, there it worked fine. Might be a long filename or permissions problem.

Got it working sweet on Vista x64. Placing the folder in C:/ fixed the crashing at splash screen problem for me too. Just a shame I can't get it to work with my USB gamepad. :-(

For me the gamespeed is normal. Sound glitches now and then but it doesn't really disturb if you have wipeout music on in the background. If you need to change gamma/brightness you can do that in your graphics cards settings. Oh and haha North Nitro! You might wanna check your system volume for Wave channel X) Mine is on 0 after quitting the game. Just up that.

im having probs guys i cant even launch the reg .exe thingy. it says im missing some msvcr.dll im having this problem on all computer in my house, 1x xp, 2 vista's, 2 windows 7's.... any ideas?

this is wipeout xl, not wipeout 2097, still sweet tho. extracted to c:\wipeout ran the setup all go from the desktop shortcut. it locks up when you try to close it but just push the windows key then right click wipeout on the taskbar to close. haven't played this in ages such an intense game. real nice soundtrack but 2097's is better. thanks ADHDerby

slow torrent but so very worth it. what a mental game. don't forget to install it close to the root directory and quit out of the game with alt+tab or the windows key, not by exiting from within the game. thanks again derby

When I first started it I got the black screen and my mouse was disabled, then after I got out of that, I decided to click the RegSetup and then Run Wipeout2.exe as admin. Now it works fine. I guess I took "Direct Play" too literally, you do have to click the registry thing before you play.
