The original title was supposed to have been "The Madness of King George III. But that was dropped because the makers of this film were concerned that the American audiences would wonder about parts 1 and 2.

sackboy22 - if you read the snopes.com entry you'll find that the story is NOT completely untrue - the title was changed from the stage play, which was The Madness Of George III, no 'King' in there - and yes, possibly the producers DID fear adding the numeric at the end. Dig deeper, always.
