Season 1, Episode 1: Winter Is Coming
Original Air Dateù17 April 2011
A Night's Watch deserter is tracked down outside of Winterfell, prompting swift justice by Lord Eddard "Ned" Stark and raising concerns about the dangers in the lawless lands north of the Wall. Returning home, Ned learns from his wife Catelyn that his mentor, Jon Arryn, has died in the Westeros capital of King's Landing, and that King Robert is on his way north to offer Ned Arryn's position as the King's Hand. Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea in Pentos, Viserys Targaryen hatches a plan to win back the throne, which entails forging an allegiance with the nomadic Dothraki warriors by giving its leader, Khal Drogo, his lovely sister Daenerys' hand in marriage. Robert arrives at Winterfell with his wife, Queen Cersei, and other members of the Lannister family: her twin brother Jaime, dwarf brother Tyrion and Cersei's son and heir to the throne, 12-year-old Joffrey. Unable to refuse his old friend and king, Ned prepares to leave for King's Landing, as Jon Snow decides to travel north to Castle Black to join the Night's Watch, accompanied by a curious Tyrion. But a startling act of treachery directed at young Bran may postpone their departures.

Firstly, I want to thank the people who took the time to create & upload this and all the people who were seeding this long enough for others to be able to download it too. At any rate, your efforts are much appreciated.I have to add a few (not too technical) explanatory notes about the video quality though.
My ratings: Video:6 / Audio:9
Initially, when I had already downloaded this (as well as the next 4 episodes) and saw that, beneath some of these Game of Thrones torrents by DMT, the user named "totsubo" had mentioned bad quality, I thought he was just trolling, maybe didn't know the technicalities, had been using the wrong codecs/settings or was at least just wrong in some way. He's not.
I realised that, in certain scenes, the screen areas with higher contrast parts/edges (snow, sky, fog, detailed or shiny things), as well as the light-coloured logos & text overlays, would flicker and wobble when there's movement on the screen and I wondered if my own codecs/settings were wrong, although now I'm pretty sure they are not: I took a good look at conversion from i to p (in general and 720i/1080i to 720p/1080p respectively) and it's pretty clear to me that, with the common methods, most of the times there will be some loss in either quality or smoothness.
Basically, you'd either see some frames twice or have pixels 'leaking' into frames they aren't originally supposed to be in. The relatively high bitrate and encoding profile help a bit here to avoid additional quality loss, but they can't compensate for information that wasn't there in the first place. Altogether, this can result in still a nice quality for single frames - and on the other hand in choppy or fluttery-looking movement in some scenes.
I went to the local video rental shop the other day and rented the GoT Season 1 Bluray to have an adequate reference point for the original quality. Watching the same episodes off the Bluray, there's no flickering, wobbling or choppiness/tearing whatsoever.
In the meantime, I had also downloaded 720p file of the first episode. As a matter of course, compared to the Bluray as well as to this 1080i/p conversion, the 720p version lacks some detail because, as I said, each still frame of the higher resolution video contains more information and is thus visually sharper.
The 720p version, however, doesn't flicker/wobble when the video actually plays and that definitely makes it more favourable, at least from my point of expectations, than a higher resolution video that flickers/wobbles in high contrast scenes/areas (actually, to a certain amount, it does that all the time, so it's unnecessary eye strain in my opinion, but it looks less choppy when the scenery is rather smooth without very bright or dark parts).
I did all of this on a native 1920x1080 pixel display (on my gaming laptop) and I haven't had any of these visual appearances before with any video that had an original resolution of 720p/1080p. Just to be sure, in this specific case anyway, that not the display or the laptop performance were the issues, I streamed this download from a media server to my larger TV screen (which is 1920x1080 as well) but it made no difference.
The Video part still gets 6 of 10 points from me because the issues with it are mostly just the way it works with these kinds of conversions (any 720i/1080i is practically jerky) and, even then, the video quality per frame is still pretty good, just too far from being as good as true 1080p. Depending on display size and contrast settings, some people might still be happy with it.
My conclusion though is that I recommend the 720p version that's commonly available (tagged with CTU [eztv]) - or renting the Bluray if you don't need to see the whole series/season again. Around here, renting a whole season would be about as expensive as buying it online (on Bluray about 60 usd for either), so you might as well consider buying it (if you're a quality junkie, in which case you wouldn't want to stick with 720p for long anyway).

AlmondWolf (2013-08-21)
(continuation)Audio quality is very good with both versions, at least from my hearing perspective. Usually, there's not much that can go wrong with audio anyway, as long as the bitrate is suited well enough and it stays synchronous, both of which are the case here. The only small drawback is that the volume level is a bit low here (1080i/p), which can be an issue with mobile devices (hence the rating 9 on Audio) but shouldn't be a problem with a nice laptop/gaming rig, let alone a good amplifier. Nuisances with audio are easier to compensate than those with video.
As always and in any case, your mileage may vary of course.
No puns or hostility intended.
Cheers.
