This is the UK version, not the full one. It's missing about half a minute where they test the breathing fluid on the rat.BrutalCykx (2009-12-07)
Why do you say DVDrip when anyone can see after 5 seconds that this is a CAM?(screen jumping up and down, unusual width format, movie doesn't scale well when viewed fullscreen, etc...)

i do NOT recommend.

Get the original theatrical version.I've no real problem with the quality, but yes, it's missing the shot where the rat breathes oxygenated fluid, and yes, there are extra scenes just before 1:09. Both make the movie less mysterious, less strong, and therefore less convincing.
Get the original not the remix (tm) :)

Hm. Downloading this now,http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/4596763/The_Abyss_[1989]DVDRip[Xvid_AC3[5.1]-RoCK_amp_BlueLadyRG
Unless the above is it, there is no original version on here.
I should say that my first "huh!?" moment was with the rat scene, and then at 1:09 I had enough and deleted it.
This was one of my absolute faves and I have it on VHS but no working VHS player :P If it ever appears in the supermarket bins (and it has no 'blahblah edition' sticker on it I might as well buy it, haven't seen it yet tho.
But try the above link anyway, that's what I'm doing.

This movie is perfectly fine, I dont see any jumping up and down, and im watching it on a widescreen, and its scaled alright. If this movie is from 1989, you guys should stop complaining and just be glad, there is an .avi for you to watch it on, and not a VHS VIDEOTAPE!YES its a good quality rip
YES i do recommend.
There is over 100 seeders, so the rest of us must not find it that bad!
A/V - 9/9!

I had the special edition r1 dvd for a while (til someone stole it from me) and the scene with the rat was definetly in it... why is it it has been removed from this version? surely it's not because some animal rights thing, is it? does the UK have stricter censorship laws and regulations than the US? that would be wired... actually it would seem wierd, in any case, as the oxygenated fluid actually exsists and they try it on rats (as with most things aimed for use on humas) and they actually had the real thing and really did put the rat in the fluid, for real, while shooting that scene (or at least that's what the text commentary on the dvd said)...anyway...
I prefer the original cut, but I liked that it wasn't any new special effect shots for the S.E. as in, say, "Star Wars S.E." so it really felt like part of the original...
the most important thing is that now I can school my nieces and nephews in what James Cameron did before those pieces of shit "Titanic" and "Avatar" (right after we watch "The Terminator" movies and "Aliens" that is) so... truly and seriously:
thanks for the ul.
you've just completed my J.C. collection up to "True Lies" (don't think I'll show 'em that one, even though it's fucking hilarious)
thank you again

PLS SEED GUYS.. thanksfrijolito (2010-12-23)
Fluid breathing is a reality. Five rats were used for five different takes, all of whom survived and were given shots by a vet. The rat that actually appeared in the film died of natural causes a few weeks before the film opened. According to James Cameron, the scene with the rat had to be edited out of the UK movie version because "the Royal Veterinarian felt that it was painful for the rat". James Cameron repeatedly assures that the rats used for this take didn't suffer any harm.severed1314 (2011-12-12)

This one is the FULL uncut version with the rat breathing fluid I just watched it. You can see in the info it is about 6 minutes longer than this one.
