In this gritty drama two girls trying to survive in an English borstal (all girl youth prison) will try to escape for two very different reasons; Annetta to attempt to visit her baby daughter, who is being raised in a convent; and Carol, who hopes to be recaptured and sent to a closed borstal where she knows her girlfriend Doreen is being held. Many reviewers mentioned that this movie is very similar similar to Alan Clarke's grim masterpiece ‘Scum’, even sharing the same screenwriter Others have commented that the film is well-acted, well-scripted, thought-provoking and unpleasant. One reviewer calls it “a must-see if you like your movies hard and unembellished”. Another reviewer said it is “disturbing, heavy going, extremely watchable, provocative and gut-churning”. Some really talented people were involved in this production by HandMade Films. Eagle-eyed viewers will be able to spot the early efforts of several now-familiar faces, including Robbie Coltrane ('Puff Guts)' , Kathy Burke (‘Glennis’), Dana Gillespie (‘Bud’), Pauline Mellville (‘Crow’) and Pam St Clement (‘Strapper’).
