British singer Leona Lewis covered the song for her debut album Spirit in 2007 and released it as her third single in North America. The music video for "I Will Be" began filming on 18 December, 2008 in New York City and was directed by Melina Matsoukas, who also directed the international version of Bleeding Love's music video. Chace Crawford from The CW's Gossip Girl stars in the video with several speaking lines. In the video, it is presumed Lewis and Crawford's character stole a large amount of money, and are being pursued by the authorities. Lewis tells Crawford she can't stay with him, and will someday meet up with him again. After leaving him she gets herself caught by the police and sacrifices herself so he can escape. She is arrested by an NYPD officer, played by Cedric Darius. The lyrics to Lewis' version of the song are slightly altered; in the middle 8, Lewis sings, "without you, I can't breathe", where as in the original recording Lavigne sings, "without you, I can't sleep".
