Because after 7 years of torture, pleading guilty and being moved to a non-torture chamber prison is better than nothing. Those confessions are derived from torture and are not reliable.
Imagine all the humiliations those guys went through, day after day, month after month, year after year... just as bad as anything in stories you read or see about Vietnam. Wouldn't you confess to make it stop?
I am sure they told them "You will be here forever if you do not confess. If you confess, you can go to normal high security prison and get to live a normal inmate's life without shock therapy, chemical torture, no more blind folds 24/7, no more Metallica blaring 24/7 (yes, that's what they did) and you'll get to eat Hillel meat instead of the pork we force feed you, which is against your religion"
I am sure that sounds like heaven compared to what they've gone through.
