Description:

_____________________________________________________________________ MicroXP v0.82 by eXPerience _____________________________________________________________________ Thank you for trying this special MicroXP edition of Windows XP. With a WINDOWS folder that is only 199Mb and a CD size of just 99.9Mb, this has to be one of the smallest Windows XP installations out there. Whats more - you can use 99% of the programs you always use and up to now there is not one single report of any game not working in MicroXP. This installation takes only 5 Minutes 30 seconds. This install includes default XP drivers for Ethernet/Sound/SCSI/RAID It has all languages kept, except Chinese/Japanese/Korean. It has all keyboard layout choices kept. It also has Service Pack 3 final slipstreamed into it. LAN Networking is now possible - Use 'Map Network Drive' and just put the computer name of the computer you want to network with. Digital Cameras and Scanners can also now be used. The ISO file size is the same as in the previous release - 99.9Mb _____________________________________________________________________ [Statistics] Installation time, in VMware, from ISO file, from end of formatting .......... 5 Mins 30 Secs RAM Usage On First Installation ........... 39 Mb Handles ................................... 2229 Threads ................................... 157 Processes ................................. 15 Entire Install Size ....................... 205Mb Documents and settings folder size ........ 3.19 Mb Program Files folder size ................. 2.79 Mb WINDOWS folder size ....................... 199 Mb Files In System32 ......................... 815 ISO File Size ............................. 99.9 Mb _____________________________________________________________________ [Services Remaining In Windows] Cryptographic Services DCOM Server Process Launcher DHCP Client Event Log Logical Disk Manager Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service Network Connections Plug and Play Print Spooler Remote Access Auto Connection Manager Remote Access Connection Manager Remote Procedure Call Server TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Telephony Windows Audio Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Windows Installer Wireless Zero Configuration Workstation All these services are enabled on installation, so you can start using Windows straight away. _____________________________________________________________________ [eXPerience Desktop Folder Contents] Desktop Icon Layout (Lets you save your desktop icon layout) Driver Install Tool (Easily install all your drivers, see ReadMe) Keyboard Settings (Quick access to Regional and Language options) Networking Guide (Shows how to get connected to your networked PC's) Registry Backup (Make a complete backup of the registry in one click) Services Config (Files to enable and disable functionality) ShrinkXP Scripts (to remove any items you do not want or need) Web Browser (Browzar, to download a full browser of YOUR choice) Windows Media Player 11 (This is just a readme file about WMP11) _____________________________________________________________________ [WHAT YOU CANNOT DO] This is a greatly reduced installation of Windows XP Professional SP3 Please read these notes BEFORE using this edition of Windows: * * * * * * * * * * * * - SINGLE USER ONLY You cannot add any additional users. Do not try to add more users, otherwise your main account that is used by default (Administrator) will become the new account and after logging in, you will not have any desktop theme (not even Classic) and the whole account will be ruined. You'll probably have to install Windows again because if you make a new account it replaces Administrator and tries to log you in with Default User - the problem with this is - there is no Default User anymore. * * * * * * * * * * * * - NO NATIVE SUPPORT FOR FTP SITES There is no built in support for downloading from FTP sites, try using Filezilla or WS_FTP if you need to do that. Even just Opera or Firefox can probably do it. This functionality is gone because the Application Layer Gateway service is gone, along with ALG.EXE that normally runs in Task Manager, taking up about 6Mb RAM for what amounts to no reason. * * * * * * * * * * * * - NO VISITING WINDOWS UPDATE You cannot visit Windows Update with this version of Windows because Internet Explorer is removed. You can manually download updates from Microsoft and you can also use the alternative Windiz Update website through Opera or Firefox. Because so much has been removed from this edition of Windows, you are not likely to be any more safe installing updates for Windows. NOTE: Because this edition of Windows uses a patched winlogon.exe in order to remove the oembios.bin file, you really should not update Windows anyway, in case winlogon.exe gets replaced by an update. There are more details about this in the eXPerience folder on the desktop once MicroXP is installed. * * * * * * * * * * * * - NO FAST USER SWITCHING Apart from you only being able to have the one account anyway (Administrator) the ability to do Fast User Switching is also removed. * * * * * * * * * * * * - NO PASSWORD STORAGE/AUTOCOMPLETE Windows will not save stored passwords, however, this only really applied to Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, which are removed. You will be fine using Firefox or Opera web browsers and Thunderbird email client for emails. Those are self contained programs and take care of storing your passwords by themselves. * * * * * * * * * * * * - NO CD-ROM AUTOPLAY When you insert a CD that would bring up a screen to install the program contained on the CD, this does not happen in this version of Windows, you will have to explore the CD manually and run whatever file it is that runs the program's setup, usually setup.exe on the root of the CD. If the CD has a file called AUTORUN.INF then open that file and look at which .exe file is listed in AUTORUN.INF * * * * * * * * * * * * - NO SMART CARD DETECTION * * * * * * * * * * * * - NO SCHEDULED TASKS You cannot set programs, like AntiVirus or Hard Disk Defrag programs to run in the future IF they need the Scheduled Tasks service in Windows. If you are going to run those types of programs you will have to manually scan or defrag whenever it is convenient. Despite this, one program that will schedule its operations is Perfectdisk defrag, you do not need Task Scheduler for this program to run a scheduled defrag. * * * * * * * * * * * * - NO REMOTE DESKTOP There is no Remote Desktop in this version of Windows because the Terminal Services service is removed. * * * * * * * * * * * * - NO THEMES You cannot have the Luna (Blue/Olive/Silver) desktop theme in this version of Windows, the only theme you can choose is Windows Classic which it is already set to by default. You can however install Windowblinds if you want to and it will work fine, Windowblinds does not rely on the Themes service. You could even make MicroXP look like Vista with the Ironjer AeroGlass The Remix V4. Use v4 not v5 of that if you use it. * * * * * * * * * * * * - NO UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY SERVICE I always thought UPS Service delivered parcels but apparently not, if you have this type of device then it will not work on this version of Windows. A UPS is only used for emergencies like if you have a power cut - thats if you even have such a device. _____________________________________________________________________ [WHAT YOU CAN DO] * * * * * * * * * * * * - PROGRAMS - You can still install and run just about all the programs and games that you can run on a normal installation of XP. There is a text file in the eXPerience folder on the desktop that has a list of programs that work and includes some that don't work (not many). Even Office 2007 installs on this version of Windows * * * * * * * * * * * * - GAMES - Up to now, there has not been one single report of any game not working on MicroXP. Gaming is what this edition of Windows is all about, it gives better benchmarks than any other version of Windows I have ever tested. * * * * * * * * * * * * - LAN NETWORKING - At last - MicroXP now has the ability to browse your local network. All you need to know is the computer name of the computer you want to connect to and thats about it, just right click My Computer and choose Map Network Drive. All computers can see each other even if every computer in the network is running this MicroXP. * * * * * * * * * * * * - CAMERAS AND SCANNERS Now in MicroXP it is possible to use a digital camera (USB only, no Firewire) or a scanner. Tested and working with a Fuji FinePix 6MP camera. The Photo Printing Wizard is not included, neither is the wizard to download photos from the internet, but the rest of the functionality for cameras and scanners is as complete as in full Windows. My favourite saying: whats missing, you're not gonna miss! Print photos with Photoshop or maybe even Irfanview. Ctrl+P to print works in every single program that supports it, so its not like we ever needed the photo printing wizard, which only ever made all images I fed through it A4, even small images, so it actually did not even work, unless I skipped a button but there really are no buttons to skip in that wizard, its useless. * * * * * * * * * * * * - DIAL-UP CONNECTION - You can still use a Dial-Up connection (Broadband or old 56k modem). This is the one major flaw in other stripped out operating systems, a lot of UK users still use a modem with broadband... in this edition, RAS Dial-Up/PPPoE/DSL/ADSL connectivity is OK as well as old 56k modems. Yes, try this install on a Pentium II or even an old 486 might run it! They had 75Mhz processors and 8Mb RAM with 4Mb graphics cards. * * * * * * * * * * * * - WEB BROWSER - This installation already includes a basic web browser called Browzar that uses a few core files left from Internet Explorer. No, Internet Explorer is not included, but select files included in this installation that come from Internet Explorer are vital to running Windows. Its also Internet Explorer related files that allow you to open CHM files, which you can do in this edition of Windows. This Browzar web browser is only here so you can at least get online and download Firefox, Opera, Netscape or whatever browser you want. This not only saves space on this CD, but you get to choose what web browser you want to use and you get the latest version not an old and possibly insecure version. Flash v9.0.124.0 for Firefox and Opera is included, so Google Video and YouTube work straight away in whichever browser you install. * * * * * * * * * * * * - PASSES WGA CHECKS If you go to download for example, Windows Media Player 11 from Microsoft's downloads section, you will need to validate windows by running the GenuineCheck.exe file that Microsoft asks you to download as part of the Windows Genuine Advantage checks. Its fine to do this, don't be scared of your key being blacklisted. * * * * * * * * * * * * - WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11 You can install Windows Media Player 11 in this edition of Windows. NOTE: Because the file WMPLOC.DLL is not in system32, Windows Media Player 11 will say that it could not complete setup or words to that effect. IGNORE THIS ERROR! Windows Media Player 11 is fully working after you install it and get that error, Windows Media Video type formats stream in Opera and Firefox still - so you can ignore that installation error. Just make sure if you install Windows Media Player 11 to have the Cryptographic Services service enabled. Windows Media Player 11 needs that service started to install. After installing Windows Media Player 11 you can then disable Cryptographic Services if you wish, like a lot of stuff in Windows, it doesn't really do anything important. * * * * * * * * * * * * - WMV STREAMS - Once you have installed Opera, Firefox, Netscape or the browser of your choice, as long as you install Windows Media Player 11, you can stream Windows Media Videos from websites like the BBC's News website, or anywhere that has WMV streams. This is possible because there are three DLL files added to the Windows Media Player folder in Program Files. Don't worry, theres no Windows Media Player there, it only contains the vital DLL files for streaming compatibility in Firefox and Opera if you install Windows Media Player 11. Note that you do need to install Windows Media Player 11 to view .WMV movies in web pages. * * * * * * * * * * * * - FLASH - If you install Opera or Firefox web browser(s) in this special MicroXP edition of Windows, you can go visit YouTube or Google Video without even having to install Flash Player. You can just watch the videos right away. _____________________________________________________________________ MD5 Checksum: 70dbd630c074d190da14e50fac27253d _____________________________________________________________________ Don't forget to join SnipeR's Redemption Network: http://www.retestrak.nl/Board/ _____________________________________________________________________ Enjoy this fine release from eXPerience Release Date: June 22nd 2008 _____________________________________________________________________

This has the Wireless LAN fix to automatically see other wireless networks (aka your neighbours, muhahaha)

djmen (2008-06-23)

Thanks again. eXPer1ence
Now I will try my connection with wireless and games!

osaire (2008-06-23)

Thanks for the release! Question, though... It seems to have no floppy or PCMCIA/PC Card support. Doing without floppy is fine, but the only connectivity on my old laptop is via wireless on PCMCIA. Anything I can do here?

IIIlllIII (2008-06-23)

Just installed this and tested with few games and programs. This makes my old 1.2 ghz PC boot faster than my duo 3.4 ghz PC. AVG came up clean,I just hope there is not some stealthy malware hidden somewhere.

"Just installed this and tested with few games and programs. This makes my old 1.2 ghz PC boot faster than my duo 3.4 ghz PC. AVG came up clean,I just hope there is not some stealthy malware hidden somewhere."
Try it on your 3.4 dude. Evil!
No there is no malware, only false positives like cmdow.exe and files made with QBFC.

HackHeaven (2008-06-24)

thanks alot for this man! makes regular xp look fat haha, welcome to the new "skinny" age, right? lulz

HackHeaven (2008-06-24)

NO
VIRUS/MALEWARE/SPYWARE/ADWARE/WAREWARE/WARE
or WARE IN THIS!!

airdale (2008-06-24)

Wow! This is great! Not a single error so far. I'm having a little trouble getting my VIA Vinyl sound, but I'll get it. Just need a couple dll's. I love the Browzar! Might not even install Firefox. This will work great on my 300 MHz laptop, almost sorry I bought a new one, almost!
Thanks eXPerience!

PT_man (2008-06-25)

I've been dual booting microxp 0.6b for some time, Couldn't be more pleased except for the lack of application compatibility, which causes two or three old games to be non-functional, as a suggestion for future releases compatibility mode would be nice to have back for older games. Other than that networking support is awesome, thanks for the great OS!

attawan (2008-06-25)

Hi Experience,
i can't find russian language in microXP v.082, how can i enable it?

HackHeaven (2008-06-26)

eXPer1ence - is there any way at all to enable theme service? for use with UX-Theme or Visual Styles???????????????????????????????
PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

ntoskrnl (2008-06-26)

Thank eXP - Great work as always.
@HackHeaven: OK could you please stop that???????????????????????????
PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ????ZZZZZZZ???zz????///////////////????zzz?zedzed?slashslashslashZZZ

When you've stopped, you might kindly ask eXP to provide a link to the "Themes service silent installer" he made recently :)

 eXPer1ence (2008-06-27)

This installs themes again:

IIIlllIII (2008-06-27)

I'm having a problem installing my printer, i already set the cryptographic service to automatic but the driver setup file keeps giving me an error saying the registry keys for the cryptographic service is missing.

djmen (2008-06-27)

I do not run the program America Online 9 Opt. I do not connect.
:(

attawan (2008-06-27)

Hi eXPer1ense,
would you please tell how can I enable russian language in this microxp v.082 ?
any help would be very much appreciated.

franklin050187 (2008-06-28)

Thanx,
works like a charm,
fast install,
drivers pack are ok,
good to be able to use my french keyboard again (i was running micro server 2003 and only us keyb were implented),
only 1 black point: f*cking security is a little too high, i cant even disable my network card xD,
but best release ive tested.

franklin050187 (2008-06-28)

edit: just FYI, i m using my mother's laptop with vista, if you install xp on another partition vista will no longer boot, so to enable dual boot with vista, use vistabootpro (freeware).

thanks eXPer1ence for the themes service link, works great! and also for MicroXP! bye

Actium (2008-06-29)

Heya eXPer1ence, I'm pretty impressed that you got this down so low; I've been nLiting XP installs for years and I never got it this small..
I'm assuming you used nLite, so do you think you could post your last session.ini file? I'd like to see it!

Actium (2008-06-29)

Or, if not, if you could make a 64-bit version of MicroXP I'd appreciate it.

hedpi (2008-06-29)

Hi eXPer1ence,
Just burned and tested it, tested some stuff that worked, but AVG8free didnt install, because it thinks the OS is older (2ksp4), what's the workaround on this?

ntoskrnl (2008-06-29)

Actium:
eXP used nLite in the beginning, but with nLite you'll just get started. The ISO will end up about 130MB and this is below 100MB. There are tons of files to manually delete.

 eXPer1ence (2008-06-30)

Yep - 5 minutes with nLite to remove the bulk, then 5 days of solid work, 8 hours a day, testing it to strip it to the last files needed, only the files needed that is, but to keep all services and functionality working.
This is it folks, no real need now to ever make a v0.83 unless SP4 comes out or theres considerably more files I do not need in the OS/in I386 but thats not even something I am doing or working on, yet anyway.

Actium (2008-06-30)

ntoskrnl:
Thanks for the info, I did not know this.
Tested Pidgin and Foobar in vmware and they both work, which means GTK works.

jLuev (2008-06-30)

hey eXPerience, i am running v0.81
and i really like it, what is new on v0.82? i'm looking to download, but theres only 1 seeder. lol
i'll just wait a while :)

jLuev (2008-07-01)

""""eXPer1ence at 2008-06-22 17:22 CET:

Does this mean i can connect via a wireless connection now? with 0.82

muls27nw (2008-07-01)

You are a bad ass. I can't believe how small Windows XP can really be!

ntoskrnl (2008-07-03)

Yea in 0.81 wireless doesn't work but in this version it does. That's the only change AFAIK.

zathlon (2008-07-04)

MicroXP rocks! If you could fix one thing I would be beyond grateful. Fix the bug or whatever that wont let .Net Framework 3.5 from installing. I have even tried the standalone copy (since the normal one wont work cuz BITS is missing), and it crashed. I tried reinstalling, same thing.

hspank (2008-07-05)

how can i use this to create a microxp recovery partition? my subnotebook lacks a cd-rom drive and OPK is nowhere to find .

tonyboy007 (2008-07-06)

DOnt DOwnload please evryone dont it has a virus AVG 8.0.136 2008.07.05 Potentially harmful program HideExec.BD

tonyboy007 (2008-07-06)

VIRUS HIDDEN I scanned the iso image by itself and it came up clean then I mounted the iso with MagicIso and scanned the cd drive and found VIRUS!! AVG 8.0.136 2008.07.05 Potentially harmful program HideExec.BD virus spyware and or keylogger

tyrantxdotcom (2008-07-06)

Here is a game that doesn't work F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate. It wont let me type but 3 letters in a box yet there are suppose to be 4. Pretty screwed up, BUT to make it worse, that "browzar" is a browser for complete MORONS, you are a fool to use it! Just do yourself a favor, google BROWZAR and read about the badware in it!
Read about it here
http://web3.0log.org/2006/09/01/new-secure-browser-browzar-is-fake-and-full-of-adware/

dejn (2008-07-11)

Hey im just wondering if this version of XP detects wireless LAN?
Im planning to run this version on my laptop that is not really up-to-date.

Prodigy6 (2008-07-13)

jani86 (2008-07-15)

Hello!
I love MicroXP it boots really fast.
I had 0.6 a long time now, and testet 0.82 today.
I think 0.82 is a little bit slower to boot than 0.6b, but it's not a problem =)
But have some questions..
Any way I can get hibernation?
Possible to get the whole OS in an other language? (I have XP PRO SP3, so if anyone knows what files I need to overwrite, I would really like to know =) )
Wanna try this as an Car-PC Os, and then hibernation is good to have.

acettea7 (2008-07-16)

hello eXPer1ence,
i have a eeepx 901 and the wifiN is a ralink RT2860 miniPCI.
it was working perfectly with original windows,
but with your microXP 0.82,
it says "no wireless networks were found in range" when u press refresh network list...
do you know why? i thought this 0.82 version supports wifi..
thanks

schmendrik (2008-07-17)

hi,
first of all thanks for this minimalistic xp. great work!
@eXPerience -
my question: do you have a guide for booting from usb drive?
i tried some of the guides from the net, but your microxp is lacking the winnt.exe and an autoboot.inf.
so maybe you could provide a bootblock file or similar, so i can write this via ultraiso to the pendrive?
my stick definitely boots (hirens bootcd works), but a small guide for microxp would be nice.
thanks mate

ntoskrnl (2008-07-17)

@ tonyboy007:
Do you even know what your HideExec.BD is? It's a program that can hide command windows. In this release (and in all other eXP's releases) he uses cmdow.exe. Google it. If he didn't use it, there would be ugly command windows everywhere. It's like a knife. You can do harmful things with it, but most people (like eXP) use it only as a tool.
@ Prodigy6:
I do understand Swedish but most people don't. eXPerience doesn't. Speak in English or get flamed, I see you chose the latter. Now I've got two reasons to flame you.
I really see now why people in Finland think why Swedish people are gays (i'ts like a tradition). You seem to be a good example. You also flame other people's stuff down to hell before you've even tried them. I bet you think Vista is crap. If you don't like what's been removed, DON'T USE THIS FUCKING RELEASE! Use your full XP which barely runs on a 2GHz processor and 512MB memory, or even a 400MHz proc and 64MB of RAM. Believe me, MicroXP runs smooth on that setup. And BTW, this is an English language site...
@ jani86:
Try Googling your problem...

jebla (2008-07-19)

tryied it on ibm t42 with norwegian kb. all the letters are fuxored up. and yes, still buncha languages and regional options are missing from control panel.

persiansoul (2008-07-21)

I have been using Windows XP Performance Edition (February 2008) for some time now, but I guess I will try this considering it is very small =D.
I will be reformatting my pc today or tomorrow and will give feedback. Nice download speed!

kEnX07 (2008-07-26)

bugs in this is i cant format my usb, icant install directX...can som1 tel how 2 fix this??? PLZZ???

ntoskrnl (2008-08-02)

@FindFantasy:
Yes, but eXP doesn't like using Vista, and of course the new Windows File Protection which doesn't allow any files to be changed so you have to reinstall on every system file change, which is a no-no.
@kEnX07:
The right-click formatting thing is removed from this release...
Some other people, too, are having problems installing DX, but some people don't. Nobody knows why.

coolboi (2008-08-03)

ITS WORKING!!!
Thanks...

ntoskrnl (2008-08-06)

About the DirectX problem... You don't need to install DX, just put the d3dx9_24.dll - d3dx9_36.dll files (the DirectX libraries) in System32. They can be found on any DLL site.

Aotearoa (2008-08-06)

It seems like I'm the only novice here but I can not find what file to execute? I have downloaded the file, burnt it and tried to start the installation but couldn´t find either winnt or setup...

lord_wonko (2008-08-06)

OK, MicroXP works great :D , so I must say thank you very much, eXPerience!
I've installed it on an Asus EEE PC 701 (there's a portable version of Office 2007 on TPB that works nicely with it as well) and I've managed to install all the drivers, except one. That's the Realtek HD audio drivers. They're really a royal pain in the arse. There are missing files that it tries to search for, even if I replace them from my own PC with full XP SP3 install, it still moans and asks for more :( . Just a note for any EEE users out there, as soon as I find some sort of solution, I'll post back here.

lord_wonko (2008-08-07)

Problem solved. eXPerience's previous release, 0.6b has some good info:
http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/4239067/All-In-One_MICRO_XP_(88_MB_ISO_BootAble)

The part that helped:
When you install programs like Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% or your sound card drivers,
you might get a pop up asking you to insert your Windows CD. All you need to do is put
your MicroXP CD in your CD-Drive and point Windows to the I386 folder and it will
find the SCSI driver for Daemon Tools/Alcohol 120%, and various other drivers you might
need. These drivers are not stored in your WINDOWS folder but they are still available
on the MicroXP CD.

fregrit (2008-08-07)

Didnt work very well for me. Size matters i guess..

ntoskrnl (2008-08-09)

@Aotearoa:
You need to boot from the CD, as the nfo says...
@fregrit:
Well, tell us what you're missing so eXPerience can make a better next release.

cotkubt (2008-08-11)

All I have to see is that it's done by eXPerience and I know it's good. Many Thanks again eXPerience!

coolboi (2008-08-13)

To avoid possible burning errors, set your burner to TRACK AT ONCE, NOT DISC AT ONCE...
:)

schmendrik (2008-08-16)

ERROR:
the association table in the wireless network configuration is not there and i cannot add a wireless network to the list, because the whole table where you can enter the wireless key (association table) is missing! how can i fix this?

dezbot (2008-08-17)

I want to thank you for this - truly amazing. Works great.
However, I'm having problems installing 3ds Max 2009 - the logs show it fails to install .NET 3.0, which I guess is a requirement for that program.
Attempting to run the .NET 3.0 installer downloaded directly from MicroSoft also fails, with the following error:
"Requirments & Software Prerequists
BITS Service
BITS service must be enabled before you start the instilation process. Enable BITS service and run setup again."
Is this a service that can easily be added to MicoXP and if so, how?
Log files from the 3ds Max install show this, by the way:

Protocol22 (2008-08-18)

For those who choose eXPeriences OS's without WMP/OE/IE - There is a way of viewing "All Videos" within Firefox without any rubbish Media Players. All you need on your computer
is the K-lite Codec package and MPlayer-1.0rc2-gui.If you install the Firefox plug-in "MediaPlayer Connectivity" you will be able to watch
all Videos in your browser, including WMV files, without Windows Media player installed.
When you install MediaPlayer Connectivity plugin it will go through a configuration wizard. It will only see Media Player Classic in the Wizard - choose this to play all media types - Then go into Mediaplayer Configuration and set it to use gmplayer to play Windows Media files - you will have to manually browse to the Mplayer-1.0rc2-gui folder in Program files and select gmplayer. It works a treat !

shangchi (2008-08-20)

I just can't get this to work. I've downloaded the iso. I've burnt the iso to cd (tried several brun-programs). But no computer of mine boots the cd.
The root of the burnt cd contains:
$OEM$ (Folder)
I386 (Folder)
WIN51
WIN51IP
WIN51IP.SP3
Is that really all? Shouldn't there be something like setup.exe or so?

 eXPer1ence (2008-08-23)

Read the NFO.
It tells you about why setup.exe is missing - that is the upgrade file, you cannot upgrade with this, only a fresh install on a formatted partition or hard drive.

bowseroffun (2008-08-23)

I really want to add chinese japanese korean input supoort. I can install the language support files using tinyxp rev05 iso which copies the language support files, but it doesnt allow me to chose korean on the keyboards selection. ahhh! no fair. Maybe there is some elobarate way of enabling this involving registry entires and manually adding files, if you can point out which those are or link me to a good website, i would MOST appreciate that!!! thanks again. btw tinyxp rev05 FTW!

tpbmxp (2008-09-06)

Thank you so much for this excellent work. I want to use this for support from my Mac in a VM and the only thing I need to do is to be able to print to a PDF or equivalent. I've tried several different PDF printer drivers like DOPDF.COM and several others, but they don't seem to be able to be installed as printers. Any idea on how to do this or something like it? MicroXP would be perfect for my application if I just had someway to print to file. Thanks again!!!

ntoskrnl (2008-09-06)

@tpbmxp:
Make sure the print spooler service is enabled.
Also, try using something different, eg. PDF995.

szucsati (2008-09-07)

This XP Rocks!
But unfortunately although the info says all the languages are in it I can't chose Hungarian as Standars/formats, keyboard layout or default for non-unicode programes. Is there a way to add it back or install it later?

tpbmxp (2008-09-07)

@tpbmxp
So far the only PDF printer driver I've been able to get to install is ReaSoft's PDFPrinter. Tried doPDF, PrimoPDF, 955, FoxIt. Researching the driver install error all point to framedyn.dll being in the \windows\system32\wbem directory and having that on the path. I've tried all of that to no avail. Don't know why ReaSoft's work but so far that's all I've been able to get to function.

SloppyMogwai (2008-09-09)

tpbmxp: Try installing Adobe Acrobat Professional, it has a PDF printer that comes with it.

acsterf (2008-09-12)

I've always liked eXPerience windows releases and this one is also great! The only problem I'm having is when I try to install it on an old Acer TravelMate 210T. Everything works fine except for the Encore Wireless PC Card (PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_1FAA).
It isn't installed automatically or is recognized by "Device Manager" as connected, also running the default CD Driver and installing the wireless manager doesn't make a difference. Only when I select "Show Hidden Devices" it can be seen, as a disconnected hw. Using some drivers found in
http://people.freebsd.org/~wpaul/marvell/
and making a forced installation it appears as "Marvell Libertas 802.11b/g Wireless PC Card" but still as a disconnected device. No matter what I do it doesn't shows as a connected hardware. In my other notebook it works just fine.
Could be something related to the OS ou could be the notebook hardware itself? I also was getting a lot of BSOD with BAD_POOL_HEADER first time I installed uXP, but now it is OK.

solielj (2008-09-13)

First of all I'd like to say that eXPerience is a god for coming up with this. I'm running WAR Online with this on a PC with only 1GB of RAM and it makes a huge difference. On regular windows it is so choppy it's barely even playable, but with MicroXP it runs smooth. I only have 1 problem right now and that's with my Saphire HD 2600AGP Pro video card. I have downloaded and installed the driver for it from Saphires website and it's working just fine, but it's a Radeon and in order to run the Catalyst Control Center it says I need Microsoft NET Framework 2.0. Which I obviously can't install. Does anyone know a way around this? I'm not even sure if I need the CCC other than to use another monitor. I just can't figure out how to get into the advanced options for the card without it.

solielj (2008-09-13)

Oh yeah also about DirectX I put the d3dx9_24.dll and the d3dx9_34.dll into the system32 folder but I also needed to put d3dx9_36.dll in there to in order to get it to work. The person that mentioned these files earlier did not mention the last one. Maybe it's not needed for some things but it was definately needed to run WAR.

solielj (2008-09-13)

"I have the same problem as shangchi.. It doesn't boot..? Or is it not a bootable ISO? If not, how do you boot it? :/
Thanks! "
Try going into the BIOS when your PC is starting up and see if you have your boot order correct. If it's booting from the hard drive first that's why it isn't working. Otherwise I have no idea why it wouldn't boot unless it just didn't burn the ISO right.

solielj (2008-09-13)

Ok nvm I got .NET 2.0 to work and CCC is working now too. I got a weird message that said the .NET installation failed but I restarted and it I wasn't getting the message that I needed it anymore and tried the CCC and it worked so I guess the installation didn't fail. For anyone wondering about emulators that work I'm about to download some and test them out. I'll let you know later which ones work.

ntoskrnl (2008-09-13)

@solielj:
As you can see from below, I said 24-36 :)
"ntoskrnl at 2008-08-06 11:52 CET:
About the DirectX problem... You don't need to install DX, just put the d3dx9_24.dll - d3dx9_36.dll files (the DirectX libraries) in System32. They can be found on any DLL site."

Ash_Firelord (2008-09-13)

Thanks, eXP, I really like this release. Great work!

oralmud (2008-09-13)

Hi there.
Got a problem with installing the latest Comodo personal firewall. Installation went with no hitch but after the reboot I get a BSOD with a message regading "cmdguard.sys". Needed to safe mode and uninstall comodo to get back to a useable state.
Any ideas on this?

oralmud (2008-09-14)

no feedback on the comodo firewall issue?
also +1 to the pdf printer. I think any virtual printer will have an issue with this version of microxp. I've tried pdffactory, zan image printer and paperless printer and they fail to install to errors similar to tpbmxp's comments. Tried also to copy the whole wbem folder from a working sp3 install to no avail.

Ulfaslak (2008-09-18)

Ok. Seriously, how come windows asks me for a PRODUCT KEY after the program is installed on my virtual machine?
And please no "LOL NOOB" -answers cause I'm new to parallels and only need it so I can use TI-Interactive on my mac.
Thank you!

tpbmxp (2008-09-20)

@Ulfaslak
I think Parallel's has a mode when you install that "helps" you install by pre-filling somethings in (I may be confusing with Fusion).
Choose a custom install instead and use the .iso for installation and it should work fine. It is on my system anyway. If I could just figure out the PDF print problem I'd be a totally happy camper. This setup is so fast it's unbelievable.

Sunfizz98 (2008-09-22)

I'm not sure why, but this microxp didn't format my whole partition, only the xp system files. Also, I didn't see an "eXperience" folder on my desktop. Other than that, this is a very solid release.

dwillow (2008-09-22)

Thanks for your hard work, eXPer1ence. This is very handy and is well appreciated.

 eXPer1ence (2008-09-24)

I read that Browzar thing claiming its got adware in it and how the homepage cannot be changed.
Hmmm, how come when you install MicroXP v0.82 the homepage is indeed changed to Google?
Some "reviews" you just know to ignore.

mentor2232 (2008-09-27)

Hi eXP!
I just have one question, how could i add hungarian language support and keyboard layout?
Is it possible to copy it from my hungarian xp sp2, if yes, please tell me how to manage this problem!
I don't really know which files are responsible for these actions...
If you can help please write a comment or send an e-mail:
langward@index.hu
Thx for helping!

botched (2008-09-30)

Great work! Keep it small and memory low.

chungy (2008-10-05)

Is there any SATA support in this version, and if not how could I add it?

chungy (2008-10-05)

nevermind, I just used nLite to add ICH8 drivers and it works fine

bejko (2008-10-10)

OK this is (almost) perfect. but...
1. How can I set Macedonian keyboard? (other cyrillic keyboards are not listed too)
2. Firewall: which of them runs normal? I need one without user interaction (computer for my parents, they don't want to (/know how to) click allow/deny :) ), any recommendations?
Thanks!

alicemagic (2008-10-11)

For anyone that needs to add language support. I'm not sure if this is the right way to do it but if you get a hold of the default (full version XP's) intl.inf file and replace it with the one that's in c:\windows\inf\, the regional options auto installer will find all the files needed from a full XP CD, just like how you'd add it normally. It worked for me at least, I got all the keyboard layouts and language bar back this way.
Also for anyone that's being asked for the CD-Key when you're installing in a virtual environment, you have to install MicroXP manually and not automatic which is what Parallels and VMware Fusion is set to as default. I think it's called easy setup or something. Disable it and you're good to go.
Btw, does anyone know what service it is that I need to enable in order to get Unity Mode working in VMware Fusion? Even after installing the tools, I only get the option to full screen. Unity would kick ass with such a small version of XP.
Thanks for your time!

Lucian90 (2008-10-18)

first thing that pop in mye head is taht this would på perfect for asus eee pc and acer aspire one.
Ill try it on my eee pc.
Thanks:D

Nomaxs (2008-10-21)

Hi jet If you look at -
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1F3B9E44-3963-4B6C-851B-1E275F4947E7&displaylang=en#Instructions
....
to me this project seems to be part of the Windows Starters Edition .. see here in the texts says :
First-time home computer users can take advantage of the core Windows XP features in a simplified and more affordable version. To simplify the Windows operating system, some features are limited in Windows XP Starter Edition.
Listed below are some of the differences between Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Starter Edition.
· In Windows XP Starter Edition, only three programs can run concurrently, and three windows per program can be open at once.
· PC-to-PC home networking is not supported.
· Sharing printers across a network is not supported.
· Multiple user accounts on one computer are not supported.
Looks like you have the same limits in MicroXP here ..
I can write and tell you more but READ my comments here earlier .. this is a wicked thing men .. to easy to believe this was worth to try ..

alicemagic (2008-10-21)

Hey Nomaxs.
You're telling others to read when it's blatantly obvious that you yourself decided not to read eXPer1ence's release note thats documented RIGHT UNDER the download link of the torrent? Hmm. Seems kind of illogical doesn't it?
By the way, if you know what you're doing, you can get EVERY SINGLE feature and process to work again in MicroXP. It's just that if you do, wtf was the point of installing a trimmed down version? What the hell were you expecting from a 99MB ISO? A media center? It even says in the release note that all themes were deleted in order to make it light as possible.
If you want all your bloat back then go install the full version.
Your English is good enough, you have no excuse not to RTFM.

Nomaxs (2008-10-21)

Hi alicemagic , as you know i didnt see a warning of risking a overrule of installation when you keep the cd in the romplayer at startup . Now i cant put the "full" edition back in .. and because of no upgrades in the day after ...
Everybody can promise me lots but do you be you shure it has only the functions your firewall names says ? our is there more in a name ? Please dont say i simply didnt have to use it .. that is not i surgest , there are allot people that dont notisch a strong safety idea. Why i didnt know this is a part of windows starter edition our did i have wrong ?

 eXPer1ence (2008-10-22)

Rock On.
Soon theres a Dual Boot CD coming out with updated MicroXP and Micro2003. Has all the drivers you could need and has ability to make standalone ISO files of the Micro variants.
This is not bullshit.
It will also have Acronis and even IE7 and WMP installers so you can have that yucky garble if you want it.
This new one supports scanners and cameras, also has a WPI with some apps, not much, just shit 'u' need.
The name is a secret right now.
The release is still in development, but will be a vital upgrade for MicroXP or Micro2003 users, a valuable addition to your trusted software collection from eXPerience.
Don't ask me questions about stuff here man I never read TPB, its a tracker not a fucking help desk. All comments should say is thanks, or if you found a genuine virus in a torrent and the thanks should be kept to a minimum.

nuboo (2008-10-23)

Hey sorry for this then, but i don't know where else to contact you.
You see, I really like the incredible small version of xp, but I can't seem to get any audio out of it.
I using it on a virtual machine for now, using virtual box (of course!).
My soundcard is some crappy realtek card, driver version 6.0.1.5377 if that helps .....
Really want it to work.

physixmaster (2008-10-28)

Read the explanation before complaining about it please. I have been downloading his stuff for years, it all works great. I can't even locate my original XP cd from years ago and I don't care all my versions are from eXPerience. Just using other people's Pc's with the full version of windows pisses me off in 3 seconds flat. I only use his versions! Remember, PC's are like air-conditioners, open windows and they don't work properly!

timmyhawky (2008-10-29)

Thanks, you did a very good job on this experience!
But I have a problem with my notebook: the PCMCIA/Cardbus slots are not detected. There are no drivers from my notebook;s company because it is made to work with the default windows drivers.
Pressing update driver says: no driver could be found
Can you maybe provide me the default Windows driver or tell me how to install it?
Thanks and sorry for my english.

black_kni (2008-11-06)

eXPer1ence...
I have a question for you..
Is there any way for me to add another service to MicroXP?
To be specific, the Smart Card service..
Been googling for hours, but I can't find anyone trying to install an extra service into MicroXP.

Crazy-Mazy (2008-11-16)

Ok, I'm pretty excited right now about this MicroXP, but there's one problem: me. I've no idea what ISO you guys are talking about. It's not in the download and I have no idea how to burn one (if I have to).
So, I got 2 folders + 3 files. What is the next step to get a working ISO file? Is there a program I have to use to burn them on a CD? Can somebody clearly explain what to do?
I searched whole google and didn't find any results, so I'll really appreciate any help. Thanks.

doubledge (2008-11-16)

@Crazy-Mazy:
Not sure what you downloaded, but if you look up at the top of the page, you'll see:
"Files: 1"
If you click on the "1", it will display the file that will download with this torrent.
IT IS:
"MicroXP-v0.82.iso"
There's the ISO.
ISO is a disk image, which you can burn with Nero or just about any burning program. With Nero, you would select "Burn image".
You can also MOUNT an ISO file with programs like Daemon Tools, Power ISO, Alcohol 120%, and even Nero has a virtual CD program that will mount an .iso file.
Hope that answers your question.
=doublèdgè=
;)

doubledge (2008-11-16)

AFTERTHOUGHT....open any Windows folder, click the "Tools" tab, select "Folder Options", and then the "View Tab".
UNCHECK "Hide extentions for known file types".
You are more than likely hiding the ".iso" extention.
When you clicked on the file, Windows Explorer displayed the contents of the file, as it would any compressed archive.
;) =d=

Crazy-Mazy (2008-11-16)

Thanks a lot, doubledge!
After unchecking that option, it ''added'' .iso after the file name. Man, such a simple thing and I was busy with it for a few hours! But hey, I've been using Windows for 2 months now (I have always used a Mac). Well, I'm going to install this MicroXP and I will let you guys know if it worked. If you don't see a reply withing 48 hours, something went really wrong :P

doubledge (2008-11-17)

No problem....and you're welcome!
We were all n00bs once.
....so, where should I send the bill? (hahaha - just kidding).
Good luck to you - let me know how it all works out. I haven't installed this yet....I need to free up a computer to test it on, which isn't a bad idea for you as well.
Or, at least, swap out your "C" drive with a spare, so as not to compromise your existing operating system.
=d=

doubledge (2008-11-20)

Hmmm......
4 Days later.......

Should have taken my advice?

KooolaNL (2008-11-22)

what is the difference from 0.81 ?

doubledge (2008-11-23)

Finally got around to trying this out.
First, I read the text that's at the top of the page.
I then downloaded a cracked version of "VMware Server", which you can find around here, somewhere....
Installed it, spent about 2 minutes with it (never used it before), then loaded MicroXP as a "Virtual Machine".
LOADED FAST! - WORKS PERFECT!
THANKS FOR THIS ONE, eXperience!
(VMware is really slick, as well. Perfect for testing this one out)
:) :) :) :) ;)

IE is pretty much impossible to remove from windows.

Hi there!
I have an asus eepc!
How can I install this from a USB Disk? Is there a program that can simply copy the iso to the root folder of a usb and then boot into a dos program which virtually mounts the iso as a drive, then runs it like a CD?
Or just installs from usb?

How do I install this? Sorry for being newb.

Please don't reply back telling me to choose another IM, and how it's bad. It's my preference. For the Flash issue, I downloaded flash for firefox, when I noticed that you don't need to install it since it's already installed. Will that be the reason to why Flash doesn't seem to work? any tips/answers will be helpful...

sloshy (2009-01-10)

Ok guys... Installing this on VMware. It asks for Product Activation Key. I did manual setup btw. Still can't get around it when it's installing. Any ideas?

Mamong (2009-01-11)

Will MicroXP work okay in a dual boot? I've currently got Vista on this machine and need a gaming OS, so I think this would be perfect.
Question is, will everything work in a dual boot? I don't want to install this only to fuck up Vista.

fraanc (2009-01-12)

i have a question..
is there any way to install it on my pc without burning it on a cd?? i got daemon tools... but when i reboot there is no virtual cd...

Kreepy (2009-01-14)

Awesome install, works perfectly on my laptop (after adding SATA-drivers with nLite). Dualboot with Linux works as well.
Keep up the good work.

ng3jk2 (2009-01-15)

I downloaded and tested this out of curiosity. I figured it might help me tame my own XP and prove to be a fantastic educational tool. Here's what I found:
During the install, the system accesses the internet (if connected). It does this for a long period of time.
A fresh install shows that drive C is shared - essentially with the rest of the world. This isn't an accident, it is by design because sharing your drive C: forces many security checks to be bypassed.
Users with access to YOUR system include:
* Administrators - Full Access
* System - Full Access
* Users - Read&Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
* Other connections can be made by [CREATOR OWNER] and [Everyone]
Just right-click on your Drive C icon and select the sharing and security tabs.
If this wasn't bad enough, there's no firewall on the system. There's no ability to create user accounts as the author of this distribution strongly warns you against. So there's no ability to password protect your system. You need to be a real dork to think this is a good idea.
For a system that immediately makes contact with an unknown server (or servers) on install, these are your first warning signs.
So before people start jumping on the bandwagon for what is essentially a distribution of XP from a completely unknown source (eXPer1ence - not even trusted on PirateBay) and a pointer to what is clearly a kiddie board (the forums), do yourself a favor and run additional security checks on this.
Better yet... stay clear of distros of this type without clear support (like the Ultimate Boot CD). If you have an older system that needs this kind of speed boost - try Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux - not some hack from a guy looking to stick it to you before you even see the desktops on your screen.
Don't trade away your security and become part of the problem by running a system like this.
It is distributions like these that continue to propagate worms, lead to identity theft and a whole shitload of real world problems.

You said SRN was a kiddie forum... Come and see. http://forum.retestrak.nl/

d347hm4n (2009-01-16)

@ng3jk2: I'm sure sure myself, ntoskrnl, eXPerience and everyone else at SRN would welcome your input. Catch you there.
BTW, writing to you from inside microXP. Running smoothly for 3months +, highly recommended for GAMERS only.

Dekker67 (2009-01-17)

@ng3jk2:
"......and a pointer to what is clearly a kiddie board (the forums)....."
Why is that the first thing you assume it is?

ng3jk2 (2009-01-18)

@ntoskrnl
"You said SRN was a kiddie forum... Come and see. http://forum.retestrak.nl/"
Ok, I'll check it out again more thoroughly. I only accessed the front pages and saw what I thought were shoutouts and no available forum/threads on the site. Since I was already put off by MicroXP, I may have overeacted by what I saw on the front pages.
@d347hm4n
Thanks for the invite. When I first saw MicroXP and what eXPerience had done with it, I thought there was a potential for a real market here (with Microsoft's permission... as long as they get paid and don't have to support efforts like these). It would also help them satisfy the demands of the most critical of Windows users - power users and system tweakers. These are the first level folks that often determine the public opinion for both products and companies.
Despite Microsoft's EULA, I don't think that a well-built and secure system with the appropriate license (from any XP purchase) can be considered illegal or pirated - at least not in court (it's only the difference between modifications being done in-house versus those being done by a 3rd party - such as LitePC, BartPE or a systems builder). EULA's have been tested before and many are considered illegal themselves but... IANAL... It's all about OEM licenses. If OEMs can legally add a bunch of crap then it's legally possible for other OEMs to remove alot of crap. That's why I think these alternative distros stand a chance.
@Tr3bG0D
"Thank you for your wonderful insight Mr. ng3jk2. You are truly and an asset to this community. Would you recommend installing Vi$ta instead?"
Sarcasm aside... No... The MS version of Vista isn't worth the hardware it comes on. No argument here. I was hoping that someone could shed additional insight into the decisions made with MicroXP. It's got potential but no legs. Out of the box, Win98 was an insecure OS. XP made some adjustments (but lacked severely in others) only to be stripped of them with this OS. That was my point. This leads me to question the person (or persons) behind this. I think these alternate distros can help produce a viable new market if done correctly.
@Dekker67
"Why is that the first thing you assume it is?"
See also my reply to 'ntoskrnl'. Maybe it was the day I visited but I saw what I thought were scrolling shoutouts of the type that would chase away anyone over 13 years old. I mean no offense but... too many kids out there with a God complex because they learned a new hack. The front page had that feel to it the day I visited but I'll check it out again more thoroughly another time. I really just wanted to focus on this OS for now and the security problems.
@James1o1o
"First off you are talking BS."
LOL... I wish you had come up with something concrete that might explain the quick perusal I gave this OS. No one has yet explained why the system is set up like this which I find interesting.
fyi... VirtualBox can run on multiple Operating Systems. I respectfully suggest you try it. It maintains a set of indicator lights on the bottom for hard drive access, cds, *network access* and such. It also doesn't require much in terms of system resources - so it's easy to test with any mid-level system and above. Run this yourself and post the results here.
===========================
To everyone else, my original post wasn't meant to inflame fans of MicroXP. It was meant to vet it against the most serious issues facing all users - that is, how quickly and effortlessly one lone hacker can wreck havoc on an entire system (banking, business networks, home lans and others) when security is disregarded. Toward that end, it isn't even a safe gaming system on any open connection to the internet.
From both a security standpoint and a legal one, this OS alternative suffers. If and when security issues are dealt with openly and transparently, then perhaps the legal ones can be challenged.

d347hm4n (2009-01-18)

@ng3jk2, We appreciate that you are on the payroll of M$ and you must be seen to expose the so called weakness in this "insecure O.S.". But honestly, there is no malware, spywaye, malicious software of any kind. You say it is insecure because it logs you into the administrative account. This is correct but seeing as this is not meant as a serious o.s.. This is a GAMING O.S. there is alot of stuff that has been striped. One of the things is the ability to have multiple accounts. Seeing as PC Gamers usually play by themselves. A single account is perfectly adequate for them. It would be a little silly for the only account in the system to only have user privileges. If, a user OWNS (legally) several windows licence's and only use's one windows anyway, it is morally acceptable for them to run a "Pirated" O's. Seeing as they have already payed M$ their dividend. If you are a serious person with a great deal of experience, then you are more than welcome to come over to us. We can have an adult discussion about this, and other release's that come out of SRN.
Peace be with you ng3jk2, but please, don't scaremonger here. Atleast have the balls to come over to us and open a free and unbiased debate.

I haven't read all your responses here...not got the time i'm afraid. But i just want to say this: by virtue of the fact that you've put a lot of effort into your comments, you really should come over to the retestrak forum and have a closer look. There's a wealth of information there.....what i've learnt in the short time i've been a member has enriched my life. We're not a bunch of hackers or kids.....but rather a bunch of people who are serious about getting the most of our machines.

Onto the so called "issue"... What server does the OS access during installation?
Does a normal unmodified WinXP install access the internet aswell?

I should note that I'm using vmware on a mac.

D7maj (2009-03-23)

you know, I don't think it actually increases performance. It DOES decrease RAM usage, as well as lessening data on hard drive. But man, just too buggy and too unstable. A lot of blue screens (indeed, not as we're used to, this one have different stuff written), and a lot²³ of crashes. I just formatted my PC and installed it, but I can't help but pressing reset button every now and then (a resource I hate to use). I can't install MSN Messenger, probably because it doesn't have passport.net services, or maybe .net framework, or whatsoever, don't really know - it just doesn't work. I noticed a slower boot too. And I won't blame microXP, because I'm not so sure about the cause, but I formatted a partition of my HD several times and installed microXP right after, over and over, but on every boot the screen for choosing the OS to boot appears, showing Windows XP twice.
It has nice things, of course, simple, clean, and everthing else. But too little resources. Even gpedit was cut off. It's just not the right OS for me, but thanks anyway. I liked to try it :D

Hey eXPer1ence, don't expect you to answer, as you have not answered anyone on this thread, but have to post anyway. Big fan by the way, ever since that 50-1 boot dvd. Have had great successes with tiny xp and just tried micro xp and can't get it going in vmware on an acer aspire one running xp home. First it asks me for a key, so i put in a random one, and then just when it is about to finish the install, I get this:
a problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error Code: 0x80070002
Any ideas?
Many thanks.

@ jonsama:
To avoid the problem of having a windows popup with the message:
?a problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error Code: 0x80070002?
If you are using VMware, then you should not use the "Easy Install" feature of VMware. This feature, auto completes the XP installation key, the username and password of the default Micro XP user. In doing so it comes to contradiction with Micro XP, which does not prompt for an XP installation key and only accepts one user.
In order to install without the ?Easy Install? feature, you should start a new VM, but choose the third option ?I will install the operating system later.? And then, in the next screen, when you are promoted to select a guest OS, do NOT choose ?Microsoft Windows? but the last option ?Other? and then under it on the ?Version? menu choose ?Other? once more. After that you can name the VM whatever you like and install it where ever you like. Alternatively you can use VirtualBox, which lacks this feature.

please please will be great! thanks in advance!

Krisando (2011-01-29)

It's hard to say whether this XP is worth it (over another Sp3 XP 300mb).
Pros:
-When just installed, uses only 40mb ram, when you install anything, this turns into atleast 200mb on bootup.
-Small, fast install.
-Bit faster than other xp, still heaps of services to turn off.
-Passes genuine activation.
Cons:
-Explorer.exe always crashes.
-Desktop icon on quickstart is missing, have to google how to add.
-Networking requires password, fix is to turn simple filesharing on.
-Not everything runs.
-Takes ageis to boot up with loading some Ati dll, something only Micro xp does.
-Replaces too many XP logos with "Micro XP".
-Drivers can be a pain, don't install this on a laptop/netbook, only a desktop.
-No calc.
~No Internet explorer. (I only use on IE only pages)
-Normal start menu is buggy and missing heaps of stuff, so you have to stick with a basic small one, which is alright.
Conclusion:
Use on a desktop pc for gaming only, and dual boot fedora for desktop use.
Or download another custom Sp3 distro, this one has some serious issues, it turns out to use just as many resources as any another (with bare services).
[Networking, desktop, cable access to network/internet, printer]
Turn all off, enable these. Remember to set your network adapter settings to manually, so you can turn off the auto services.
Minimum Services (start/run/services.msc):
Network connections
Plug and play
Print spooler
Server
Windows Audio
Workstation

I really like the idea of a super-minimized version of windows XP, as I currently have an old netbook and all of what I use it for is keeping a botting program on 24/7, and I don't need additional windows xp features for that, and it slows down the whole PC.
But a big part of what I need is scheduled tasks, so I can have the netbook automaticly restart daily at 11:57 PM. Can you provide me with a way to bring scheduled tasks back to the system while still enjoying a slim windows XP experience (or at least a way allow it to restart daily at 11:57 PM)?

Hi, I am curious and highly interested in this version. I would like to know what tools did you use, to reduce the clutter and achieve this super lightweight size? Is it possible to reduce all other languages except english US, and will that reduce the size further? if yes, I would like to make such an attempt. :)

@eXPer1ence
Nice try.
While I appreciate your effort you and many others will be offended by what I am going to say here.
A while back I made an nlite version of XP of 120MB size just 20 more than yours. It didn't contain other anything Microsoft signed files. No cmdow.exe , no IE wrapper that protects your precious privacy. Life was happy back then I made the mistake of deleting that little iso. I may doing it again seeing what treats an XP iso lends itself to.
When multiple antiviruses alert you of the risks surrounding use of cmdow utility you should let the false sense of comfort away and stay humble in your desk. YOU DO NOT NEED IT!.
The next "best thing" to come with this home cooked iso is a little 256kb exe proclaiming itself a privacy browser that is nothing else than a wrapper aroung Internet Explorer , the 6 one you would find in a XP. Browzar does not store cookies cause that is something IE does.
see more here:
http://www.hanselman.com/blog/ANewPrivateBrowserIMeanBrowzarDoesNotWorkAsAdvertised.aspx

and here:
http://techcrunch.com/2006/09/01/is-browzar-just-an-adware-machine/

or even here from Softpedia user review:
"However news sites such as the Register and even BBC news are reporting today that security experts have discovered that not only does Browzar fail to cover your tracks but is also classified as... ADWARE!!!
The search function targets adverts at you based on the search criteria. This makes this adware."
Turns out there's not even an option to set your own home page in this browser, unless you edit the file with a hex editor:
http://rogerkarlsson.com/blogs/misc/change-browzar-home-page/

I went ahead and mounted your iso and antivirus alerted me of the cookies already to be found on it such as DoubleClick, SmartAdServer, CasaleMedia etc...
This thing promises privacy but delivers adware.Plus the cmdow.exe which I repeat is Trojans' Best Friend.
Fellows you can get work done with more rightly called browsers though such as Firefox and a privacy extension if you want. (ghostery or donotrustme).
