a totally forgettable adaptation of a magnificent play with a disastrous cast. Not one singer in the lot... but then Johnny Depp WA cast as Sweeney Todd (at least at the time the actors were dubbed by professional singers)...
Moreover, the direction is trying to get the focus back on Gypsy when the play really is about the desperate stage mother, Rose...
Hopefully, there WILL be a remake soon... word is Mike Nichols is planning a remake and is hoping to get Meryl Streep to star as Mama Rose.... fingers crossed here!

BEWARE the heading "DvdRip" (is it supposed to mean "rest in peace" in this case?). This is (a) ripped from a VHS copy with pale colours and less than sharp picture and (b) NOT letterboxed, but in a panned-and-scanned version. The film was shot with an aspsct ratio of 2.35:1 (widescreen) and chopping it down to 1.33:1 is ridiculous. To top it iff, it is simply not a good transfer of a Broadway musical to film, the absence of Ethel Merman (the original Mama Rose) being one of Hollywood's grestest sins. If you need to see this film, find some outlet where you can see it in its correct widescreen version (as on the DVD), and not this pale substitute of a mediocre movie.
