Never thought I'd ever reminisce nostalgically about 1970's New York, yet here I am. It was gritty and dirty. Yet in so many ways a lot more SUBSTANCE than today. There is no comparison: The original TOP123 runs circles around the remake. The characters and story line is more realistic. (Didn't have to make the characters look like failed ppl to care about them.) Didn't have to resort to high tech graphics to create suspense (which the remake failed to do). And the ending.. Oh the ending is so simple yet, stays with you for years. The original TOP123 just like the USA in the 70's had a lot more integrity, substance, HEART!

Just want to echo the comments of Linuxist. As stated, the ending is perfect, and Matthau was one of the few actors that had the charisma to make it work. I'm against remakes in general, but the line really has to be drawn somewhere. There are certain films that should be left alone on principle. This was one of them.
