I hope he can get some money together to make another movie, because he sure didn't make much on this one. I thought Maria Bello was the best actor in this film (as the reporter, Nora). I thought Thora Birch was very good too, in her small role. Chris Cooper did as good as he could with his role as the dim-witted governor-to-be; the trouble is, his character was a little too dim-witted. No politician is quite this dim-witted - even one representing the extreme right wing. So Sayles missed the boat a bit by making the right wing a little too stupid, although George Bush isn't that far removed from Chris Cooper's Dickie Pilager. And I suppose this movie is a direct attack by Sayles on the Bush administration. Also, it is an explanation of why Bush has been so successful, despite being such a jerk. For it is an explanation of why the left is in it's current state of disarray.Like Danny (Danny Huston), the reporter turned investigator, the left is losing the battle, and despite nothing but good intentions, only loses his job as a result. He uncovers an environmental disaster, but no one that really matters could care less. Silver City (the epitome of the American dream) will still be built, Dickie Pilager will still be elected governor, and the right wing will still persist, despite it's rotting underbelly. At least Danny gets a bit of a reward in the end - he get's the girl who agrees with his leftist principles, so the left will at least collect itself to fight another day. And I'm sorry if this gives much of the plot, but all of us who have been blindsided lately by the sanctimonious, holier-than-thou right wingers already are only too aware of this ending.

I didn't like this movie. I'm also a big John Sayles-fan, but was very disappointed with this one. It's marketed with Chris Cooper on the cover and since he's one of my favourite actors, naturally I thought he'd be a lot in the movie. Wrong. He's maybe in there for in all five minutes, not adding up even to a male supporting actor. The same with Richard Dreyfuss: this movie has been advertised with some quality names that in the end only show up for a few minutes. The same with Kris Kristofferson, Tim Roth etc - it smells like fraud when the only appear for a minute or two, since their names are fronted on the dvdcover. The male leading role, Danny O-Brien, is played by Danny Huston, a pretty weak actor, which you've maybe seen in small roles in The constant gardener or The kingdom. He cannot carry a leading role, his too one-dimensional - which is especially evident when he's surrounded by actors who in their one minute on sceen makes ten times more impression than Danny Huston does the whole movie. The story is pretty weak, sometimes a stand still, and it never kicks in. Slow, boring and not with too much focus. Most of all I'm disappointed in Sayles. I thought this would be a new Lone Star, but - in fact - it's the quite opposite: nothing that thrills, no deeper psychological portraits and no story that captures you. If you want to see the whole movie, make sure you drink at least five cups of coffee before - the risk of falling asleep is obvious. It gets five ZZZZZ...but that is NOT the grades you want to go for.

I'd also like to comment on the asshole uploader who tells almost the whole story, to the end, is his description: that is simple a betrayel of trust. Why bother watching the film when suku already told you what happens? A true motherfucker.
