A ranking put it in the top ten of the most important German movies. Not less known are the two main creator of the film: the director G.W. Pabst and the genius scriptwriter Willy Haas. The Joyless Street THE JOYLESS STREET captivates with formal qualities, but also with its casting: great stars of the Central Europe, such as Asta Nielsen, Werner Krauß and the soon new Hollywood star Greta Garbo, who is to be seen here in her only German movie. Soon after the first screening, censorship had its cut, arbitrary cutbacks and reedit of different version that altered the dramaturgy of the film. For the first time an extensive, philologic oriented reconstruction through the Filmmuseum Munich brought a series of intensive changes to the original state. This digitally restaured version by Filmarchiv Austria is edited with a new soundtrack by Burkhard Stangl recorded at the Vienna Konzerthaus.
