yesterday my brother-in-law (and nextdoor neighbor) picked up an AK... today my father-in-law (and up the street neighbor) picked up an AK. And I picked up my AK plus several hundred rounds of amo.

If the rifle is fully automatic the human gods say it is illegal...here is why :
Because these human gods are blessed with powers us mere mortals cannot fathom, they can see into the future, they are psychic.
Unlike the simple fortune telling meteorologists (weather men), these prophets KNOW YOU WILL MURDER SOMEONE in cold blood, decades in advance, and are too stupid to use a sarin gas, but will use a fully automatic rifle to slay dozens, like everyone who get their hands on a hellfire trigger does.

I live in England where guns are illegal, i know guns are legal in USA, but i would have thought aks would be illegal. What would you need one of them for?

There was an assault weapons ban here for a few years, but it was allowed to expire.
As far as what do i need them for? Moose hunting, of course! (a little joke that Koernke likes to use)
I explained it to my 9 year old daughter last night. I asked her what firearms are used for and she listed off the following...
hunting
self defense in case someone tries to hurt you
protection from a hostile government
collecting
target shooting
fun
i said there was one more really good indirect use that they could be used for... she thought for a while and couldn't come up with anything. so I told her to imagine that she's a bad guy and she sees an old lady up the street walking away from an ATM and putting some money back into her purse. As a bad guy what's to stop you from going and shoving the old lady down, grabbing her purse and running off?
My daughter answered... as long as no one else is around, nothing.
So I next said, what if you noticed as that old lady was putting the money in her purse that she had a pistol on her belt? What would you do as a bad guy at that point?
She said that she would find someone else to pick on.
So merely by having the firearm it changes the equation. I hope to never to HAVE to use one against another human. And perhaps by merely having the option the situation will never come up that would force me to use it.
But if they come into my property, or my neighbor's property to do illegal search/seizure or to try to force me to leave my family and go to some Katrina style detention center... well, I will not let that happen.
And in today's world... the bad guys have lots of big, bad guns... and they don't want me to have anything close to equal so they can come and shove me down and take my property... I've got to change the equation. Fortunately, in these United States we do still have enough of a right to keep and bare arms that I can do it legally. At least for a while longer.
There was a very, very tense feeling at the gun show... so many people KNOW that something is coming soon. By Sunday evening at the end of the show almost every single box of amo was gone.
