The patch AND the update DO NOT work for me. On top of that, when I insert my cd with latin spanish 1 on it, then try to install it on rosetta stone, it does not install... then rosetta stone stops responding. What the hell do i do??

when you install it.. it launches rosetta stone... immediately close it.
run the update.
move the patch into your rosetta stone directory and run it. If you are using vista you have to run as admin.
Never update through the software.
Thats how I did it.

3rd_I, I installed the application on a Vista machine, did the updating and registering with X's and 1's then installed German I. When I tried to run after installing the German I data disk the app asked me for the activation code for the language disk. I tried the X's, it wouldn't accept, and wouldn't accept 1's, it did let me proceed however and get into the German I lessons. My question is do I have the FULL German I data available or only a limited set as it says because I didn't have the language activation key?

MagiciansFR : Did you run the patch? the xs and 1s are for the langaunge activation only... you dont register the app. The patch stops the program from interfacing with their servers. Only use the update included. I've installed this on a 32 and a 64 bit vista system with all of these langaunges. I used it today on German 1. These are the instructions I used.
1. Install the version 3 application
2. Install the version 3 update
3. Put patch.exe in the Rosetta Stone directory at C:\Program Files\Rosetta Stone\Rosetta Stone V3 and double click on it. If you are using Vista, right-click on it first and select run as admin.
4. Mount or Burn the languge files you want
5. Run the Rosetta Stone application and click check for updates later, click on add languages, add the first language, unmount the first language disk and mount the other levels of that language or other languages you want to learn. Do add another language until you have all of them that you want.
6. Click on activate or whatever.
7. The patch will keep RS from going to the RS website and ask if you want to activate by phone. Click on show me how. Enter all Xes for each of the languages listed.
8. RS will show you some numbers to give the person you supposedly are calling. Instead of calling, enter all 1s as if the RS representative had given you them, Once again, do this for all the languages listed.
9. Click OK and RS will thank you for licensing.
10 Start learning. At least one unit per day creates the best retention rate!

3rd_I, thanks for your further instructions, but it looks like once messed up, you're screwed. I uninstalled the app and tried reinstalling using your directions. It will not let me get past the update now. The update comes up with a 5118 error and then backs out. When I try to run the application to without the update it gives a 5118 error and stops, will not even let me install a language. I tried with and without running the patch. All I can think is something is sticking around in the registry?? Any clue?

Weehooo! did it. The trick was to delete the tracking.db3 file from both the Rosetta Stone folder in Program Files and the Application Data Folder (this is under Vista. I'm good to go now. Anyone else, follow 3rd_I's instructions maticulously and you will probably not have to fool around as much as I did, good luck and thanks 3rd_I. Ich kann jetzt Deutch gelearnt!

Yet again I seemed to have figured out the problem myself. Now we move on to installing the lagnuages. I am using ISObuster due to the lack of blank cd's. I open the Italian ISO in the isoBuster. After which I run the search for languages in Rosetta Stone. After 3 failed attempts I am completely stumped as to what I am doing wrong.
I am on Windows XP
Harddrive partitioned (C:, F:)
2 cd drives (disabled one incase that was a problem)
I also believe the language files have been unloaded somewhere onto the harddrive, not sure if I did that or not.

IMPORTANT - Fix for errors 5118 and 9212:

Many people have already reported on here receiving an error message containing the numbers 5118 and 9212 when trying to run the update. The same thing happened to me in fact. Several people reported having been able to fix this by deleting the "tracking.db3" file, but many others (including myself) tried that but without success.
I believe I have now figured out why that is. One previous comment reported running Rosetta Stone after deleting the file. This is a crucial step! Allow me to explain....
When you run the initial installer, it creates an EMPTY (i.e. 0 KB) file called "tracking.db3", probably just as a placeholder. Apparently this file serves as a database for the software. Upon reviewing the error log for the migration (update) program, I noticed a bunch of SQL queries that were turning-up empty sets, which is one would expect from an empty database file. The updater apparently tried to retrieve version information from this file; and being unable to do this, it returned an error and aborted.
Now, if you delete the tracking.db3 file and then run the updater again, guess what happens? The updater script RE-CREATES that empty file you just deleted, leading us right back to the original error.
Here's the verbatim output of the error from the log generated by the updater:

Fortunately, there's an easy solution to this! After you delete the tracking.db3 file, run Rosetta Stone BEFORE running the update. It will probably ask you to update to a newer version when you do, but do NOT do this, as it will render the patch useless. Instead, just click "remind me later" and immediately exit the program.
So, why do this? Well, now go ahead check your application data folder again. The tracking.db3 file is there once again, but now it actually has stuff in it!! Apparently, running Rosetta Stone for the first time is a necessary step because it generates and populates this database file on its first run. It should be around 88 KB in size.
Now that you have this file correctly populated, go ahead and run the updater again, and it'll work just fine! At least it did for me. I'm guessing this is probably why deleting it worked for some people but not for others, because they tried running the actual application before trying the updater again. I'm also guessing this is why that error was overlooked in the initial instructions, because 3rd_I (and you can correct me if I'm wrong) probably, without even giving it a second thought, ran the application before the updater just to see that the initial install worked fine.
In any case, if you would be willing to update the instructions accordingly, this should prevent anyone else from encountering those errors during the update process.
The following is a minor update to the instructions I prepared in order to prevent this error from happening in the first place. You could just copy and paste it into the torrent listing if that makes it easier:
Mount the application.
Install.
Close.
Open Rosetta Stone. /* 5118/9212 error fix submitted by Pip. */
If prompted for update, click "Remind me later." Do NOT accept the update or the patch will not work!
Exit Rosetta Stone. /* End 5118/9212 fix. --Pip */
Run Update.
Close.
Move Patch to Install Directory.
Run Patch.
Open Rosetta Stone.
Mount Language.
Install the langauge through Rosetta Stone.
To activate. enter all X for the code.
It will ask you to activate by phone. Do it.
Enter all 1 for the code.
You are good to go.

This application no longer seems to be working. I was able to load it onto my Vista machine as well XP. Unfortunately I had to reformat my XP machine and now I cannot reload the V3. I immediately get the fatal error 5118 on the very install. When I try and find the tracking.db3 file it doesn't exist. If I try to load the 2nd update it fails and won't permit me to load it. Any help? Remember I was able to set this up twice before without a problem.

Okay I figured it out. I had to unhide my application folder in order to find tracking.db3. Now my problem is activation. When i enter the "all X for the code", it gives me the minor error notification and then when I click Ok to continue it doesn't ask to activate by phone. Any ideas why?

If you are a MAC user you will not be able to mount this in Leopard. I was able to burn to a DVD on a PC and then my Mac recognized it.
As you may already know, there is not a crack/patch for the Mac version of RS3. So you will have to load this in a virtual PC environment. I was not able to get Crossover to install this. I am trying VMware next.

You indeed do have to delete the "tracking.db3" file. Then attempt to run the program, and then update and patch. Here's an update instruction on how to install this properly.
1. Mount the application.
2. Install.
3. Close.
4. Delete "tracking.db3" most likely found in folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Rosetta Stone)

@HackDetectionBot - I too received some detections in the Italian language files (have not tried others yet).
I am using AntiVir, and it is detecting "EXP/Flash.Gen"
"EXP/Flash.Gen is a generic detection routine designed to detect the exploitation of a remote code execution vulnerability in Adobe Flash Player. It was developed in order to detect unknown variants of malicious Flash content and will be continuously enhanced if needed."
I don't believe this is a trojan or any active virus, but simply a warning that the code contains exploitable flash content.
I personally have ignored these detections, and have had no ill effects.

I followed EagleESBD's instructions and everything worked.
To find the tracking.db3 file I simply went to Start>Run and typed C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ , then I went into the Rosetta Stone folder and the file was there. If it's not, then check your folder options, as it may be hidden.

the ProgramData folder is hidden so make sure if you don't see it to unhide it... click in explorer (if you don't know, which you should):
Organize>Folder and Search Options>View (tab)>Show Hidden Files and Folders (button)
I don't know why mine wasn't located where everyone else's seemed to be, but it worked for me. Hope it helps.

However, can this version only install the language files included in this torrent?
I tried to add Chinese 1-3 (from but I get the following error message:

Lovely vauge. It recognizes the CD (mounted) as the Mandarin one, but when I try to install it wont comply.
So, I tried to install German 1, and it worked perfectly.

You get every language in an iso file. No Extracting, all you have to do is burn it to a disc with PowerISO or Alcohol and it autostarts when you load it. You can also mount it to your virtual drive. It comes with all the help files, language sheets, and even a bonus language program. Works perfectly. I got this about a year ago and I love it.
Oh, and only 3.62 GB, so it fits perfectly on a DVD, or takes up as little space on your HD as possible. Trust me, this is the easiest way to go. I tried torrents like this, and the set up and installation alone was the biggest pain in the a...With this, no installation is needed.
The file is in ISO format. You don't have to install the program to your computer. You can use PowerISO to burn it to a disc, and it will autorun on your computer anytime after you put the disc in. Or, if you don't want to burn it, simply use the "Mount" option in PowerISO and choose to mount image to drive [E]. It should then open up the file folder with RS in it. If it doesn't, go to "My Computer", right click on your new (E) drive, and click run. That's all you have to do. Rosetta Stone will run on its own, no installation needed, no extracting files, it is all self-contained. You will see every language, all you have to do is choose one and off you go.
