American viewers will best know the plotline from the 1987 film Roxanne, starring Steve Martin and a prosthetic nose. Hector Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac was a real person who lived a short 36 years in the early-mid 17th century; he really was a dramatist and duelist, and he really did have a larger-than-average nose.
