Movie Description Director Walter Hill's WILD BILL is a film biography of legendary outlaw James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok (Jeff Bridges). The story covers the major events that shaped the gunman's life, including his work as a Kansas lawman, his stint in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show, and his part-time relationship with a whip-wielding Calamity Jane (Ellen Barkin). In addition, the film shows how Hickok gained his deadly reputation, as well as his repeated confrontations with a vengeful young killer named Jack McCall (David Arquette), whose mother was wronged by Hickok years back--and who may or may not be Hickok's own son. Grate Factual Picture Sad But True Some Facts
Historical inaccuracies
1. Hickok's companion's real name was Charlie Utter, and not Charley Price.
2. There were no accounts of Wild Bill facing down any outlaw by the name of Will Plummer.
3. Many details of Jack McCall's life are lost. The only evidence of his family was that his three sisters raised him in their home state of Kentucky.
4. In the film, Wild Bill meets Calamity Jane in Deadwood. In reality, however, both actually come to town in a bull wagon train.
5. Jack McCall never hired a gang of killers led by any man named Donnie Lonigan to kill Hickok. He himself kills him.
6. In the film, Hickok's final game of poker took place in the middle of the Nuttal & Mann's No. 10 Saloon. The actual location was in a corner facing a backdoor from which Jack McCall burst through and killed him.
7. In the film, McCall used a Derringer pistol to kill Hickok. He had actually used a .45-caliber revolver and shouted "Take that!", not "Sending you home Wild Bill!"
8. McCall's act of killing Hickok, however, was rumored to have been over a drunken resentment of an act of generosity in which the lawman offered money to his assassin to buy breakfast after losing to a poker game on the previous day of murder.
9. In the film, McCall wanted to seek revenge on Wild Bill after having slighted his family. In reality, he had claimed that the murder was a retribution for Hickok having killed his brother in Abilene.

In reality, among the gamblers included men like Charlie Rich, who refused to give up Hickok's usual seat which stood opposite to a wall as a prevention against attacks from behind, and Captain Frank Massey who was shot on the hand when a bullet killing Hickok in the back of the head exited through his left cheek.
