Off course you can get a virus from playing a video file, especially WMV because of the Digital Restrictions Management you can embed in them. That possibility can be used to implant a link to a server that downloads a virus. MOV, RMV, RAM, RM are other video files that can implant virus.
You can, however protect yourself. The easiest way is to switch to a GNU/Linux distribution. The hardest way is to get a software firewall, anti-virus programs, antiad-ware programs, anti-spyware programs, registry cleaners and root kit checkers, update your computer every week, reboot it about five times before it's done updating, and running scans AT LEAST once a week. As you might have guessed, the hardest way is the Windows-way. If you just want to play video files without worries, get VLC from videolan.org
PS: Even Windows 7/Windows Media Player 12 can get a virus from a video file.
