Some people have it in their heads that rars make for less data to transfer. Yes, the material is compressed, but those few precious MB you save transferring is NOT worth the work in packing it into rars, then unpacking it. Also, most "scene" dumbasses enjoy that rar shit. Don't worry, you're not crazy. We all think that rars in torrents are retarded.

some time ago not sure how long there was a program that was called DC++ or some and sometimes it failed to correctly download files so they made rars like that so u could donwload smal part of the file instead of the whole lot so you wouldn't have to redownload let's say 700mb file instead u could download the 15mb one rar file the one rar file that failed the download.

ACTUALLY They rar it because they use newsgroups wich have a maximum size for files when uploading, hence they break down the large files into smaller rar files to fit them all. Hope this has been very informative for all.

Its to deal with corrupt data.
If the avi you downloaded corrupted @ 99% you would need to download the full file again.
However with the files in chunks the max you can lose is only a 19MB chunk.
That is why.
Also allows for sharing on Fileshosting sites.
