I used to have trouble playing these MKV files until I installed windows media player (the one which comes with windows). Then the runs smoothly.
In my experience the MKV files on this site mostly have way too low sound.

VLC has about 400% gain possible I believe. Just know how hard you can/should push it to avoid distortion.

mkv plays just fine in Xine. Of course, not everyone runs Linux,...BSD or some other free operating system that supports it. You just have to install the matroska libs. These are great for converting to dvd, thanks.

mkv plays fine also on windows. You have to use a low CPU demanding codec like the coreAVC codec. I dont use windows media player, because the video keeps stuttering. try k multimedia player - a great player, or mv2player (free)

It has nothing to with MKV, MKV is just a container (the same as avi), the problem is codec, in most cases it is x264 which is very CPU intensive and if you don't have fast enough CPU it will be jerky (just download a low res then). Same with the sound, in most cases it is original sound from TV, which is DD5.1 and you need external receiver to play it or 5.1 sound card. You can downmix it to 2.0, but then set up your decoder properly othewise you could ended with right/left without central speaker.
Anyway Haali splitter/ffdshow/zoom player and evrything plays perfect!
