The main character of the film - "the Professor" - lives in his own inner dialogue with his own principles of morality and truth. After being imprisoned in a German concentration camp, he becomes a part of the drama of the condemned. Irony helps him survive the extreme situation and distances him from the cruel reality. Back from the concentration camp, the professor writes a memoir where he writes about death, but the Soviets censor it.
