Less a band than a supersonic exercise in      ±Û     Û±      conquest by volume and sheer heaviness, the band has        ±Û     Û±      burned the metal rulebook and forged a new archetype.        ±Û     Û±                                                                  ±Û     Û±      HIGH ON FIRE was formed by guitarist Matt Pike in late      ±Û     Û±      summer 1998; a scant six months after the breakup of        ±Û     Û±      his previous band, the enigmatic stoner-metal legend        ±Û     Û±      SLEEP. Formed out of the need to simply play guitar          ±Û     Û±      again, Pike jammed with settled on a line-up of              ±Û     Û±      powerhouse drummer Des Kensel and longtime guitarist        ±Û     Û±      friend George Rice, who made the switch to bass to          ±Û     Û±      round out the trio.                                          ±Û     Û±                                                                  ±Û     Û±      They had scarcely been together for a few months before      ±Û     Û±      demo-ing three songs. That demo, featuring "Master of        ±Û     Û±      Fists" and instant classics "10,000 Years" and "Blood        ±Û     Û±      from Zion," became among the most sought-after tapes in      ±Û     Û±      recent hard rock history. So carefully guarded was the      ±Û     Û±      recording, that the tape was the source of much              ±Û     Û±      speculation based on the odd tales swirling around the      ±Û     Û±      later-days of SLEEP and Pike's declarations of wanting      ±Û     Û±      to create a metal band even heavier and more aggressive      ±Û     Û±      than SLEEP.                                                  ±Û     Û±                                                                  ±Û     Û±      When the demo surfaced it was immediately clear Pike        ±Û     Û±      had succeeded in his goals. Far more direct and concise      ±Û     Û±      than its predecessor, HIGH ON FIRE got straight to the      ±Û     Û±      point, bashing away with a Neanderthal sense of purpose      ±Û     Û±      and creating hypnotic, droning waves of powerful riffs      ±Û     Û±      and low-end thunder of the likes not heard before.          ±Û     Û±                                                                  ±Û     Û±      Before the band had even made their first live              ±Û     Û±      appearance, labels flocked to get a piece of the trio.      ±Û     Û±      In the end the band chose to record with the Man's Ruin      ±Û     Û±      label and the demo surfaced in the form of a mini-CD in      ±Û     Û±      early '99, while they continued writing for their debut      ±Û     Û±      full-length.                                                ±Û     Û±                                                                  ±Û     Û±      That debut, 'The Art of Self Defense,' was recorded in      ±Û     Û±      autumn 1999 at Oakland's Sharkbite Studios with Billy        ±Û     Û±      Anderson and fell from the sky in March 2000 to an          ±Û     Û±      overwhelming response. Offering respite from                ±Û     Û±      commercialized rap-metal and warmed-over stoner-rock        ±Û     Û±      clichés of the time, 'The Art of Self Defense' served        ±Û     Û±      up a rock hard, unorthodox form of modern metal cloaked      ±Û     Û±      in strange religious theology. Though easy to pinpoint      ±Û     Û±      their influences (SABBATH, CELTIC FROST and other            ±Û     Û±      seminal hard-rock outfits), the trio's style was            ±Û     Û±      unique, distinct and absolutely crushing.                    ±Û     Û±                                                                  ±Û     Û±      Accolades poured in the world over: Rolling Stone,          ±Û     Û±      Spin, GQ, Alternative Press, Magnet, Chicago Sun-Times,      ±Û     Û±      The Washington Post, Village Voice and dozens of others      ±Û     Û±      publications. Almost overnight, HIGH ON FIRE were the        ±Û     Û±      unassuming heroes of the "riff" and the most celebrated      ±Û     Û±      metal band on the planet. On the waves of such massive      ±Û     Û±      exposure, HIGH ON FIRE hit the road. Europe was              ±Û     Û±      conquered with ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY and the U.S. taken      ±Û     Û±      in two tours of duty.                                        ±Û     Û±                                                                  ±Û     Û±      Summer 2001 saw Man's Ruin close up shop, leaving the        ±Û     Û±      band with no label and no distribution. Relapse              ±Û     Û±      offered, the trio accepted, and found themselves a new      ±Û     Û±      home. In the meantime, Tee Pee stepped in and re-issued      ±Û     Û±      'The Art of Self Defense.' No sooner had the ink dried      ±Û     Û±      on the contract before HIGH ON FIRE finished writing        ±Û     Û±      and completing a twelve-date West Coast tour prior to        ±Û     Û±      entering Prairie Sun Studios (Tom Waits) with Billy          ±Û     Û±      Anderson once again. That January '02 recording session      ±Û     Û±      (and the following mixing session at Different Fur          ±Û     Û±      Studios) yielded the bands long-awaited sophomore            ±Û     Û±      effort 'Surrounded By Thieves.'                              ±Û     Û±                                                                  ±Û     Û±      'Surrounded By Thieves' is a gargantuan amalgam of          ±Û     Û±      huge, expansive riffs that crash and drone                  ±Û     Û±      simultaneously. Rice's seismic bass lines bolster            ±Û     Û±      everything like huge flotation devices only to be blown      ±Û     Û±      apart by the cannon-like drums of Kensel. Pike's raw        ±Û     Û±      throaty vocals surface intermittently, acting both as        ±Û     Û±      punctuation as well as it's own tortured instrument.        ±Û     Û±                                                                  ±Û     Û±      Songs such as "Hung, Drawn and Quartered," "Nemesis,"        ±Û     Û±      and "Razorhoof" are staggering in their expanse. Rarely      ±Û     Û±      has metal been as powerful and pure in its ability to        ±Û     Û±      translate primal fury and aggression.                        ±Û     Û±                                                                  ±Û     Û±      'Surrounded By Thieves' was issued on May 28th and the      ±Û     Û±      HIGH ON FIRE juggernaut celebrated with a marathon          ±Û     Û±      North American Tour that saw them traverse the              ±Û     Û±      continent for six consecutive months with the likes of      ±Û     Û±      SHADOWS FALL, SUPERJOINT RITUAL, MASTODON,                  ±Û     Û±      MUSHROOMHEAD, and JUCIFER. The trio capped the year          ±Û     Û±      with a Japanese headlining tour.                            ±Û     Û±                                                                  ±Û     Û±      HIGH ON FIRE kicked off 2003 with a performance at the      ±Û     Û±      Relapse Contamination Festival and an extensive              ±Û     Û±      co-headlining European Tour with MASTODON. The band hit      ±Û     Û±      the road with MOTORHEAD and the DWARVES in April, 2003      ±Û     Û±      and followed with a headlining summer U.S. jaunt.            ±Û     Û±                                                                  ±Û     Û±      HIGH ON FIRE began 2004 by being named one of                ±Û     Û±      Alternative Press Magazine's "25 Most Important Metal        ±Û     Û±      Bands." The band then announced another U.S. tour, this      ±Û     Û±      time headlining the first of several planned 2004            ±Û     Û±      Relapse Contamination label tours beginning March,          ±Û     Û±      2004.
