Why on earth don't people ever take any notice when they read comments on downloads. If you open your eyes guys ALL KEYGENS show as virus's when scanned.Ta Craigleatger for the file ~ I had to do a restore of my hdd and lost my old one, have now got this up n running fine.
Lacena (2008-07-01)
imunionjack I hate to tell you but no not all keygens scan showing viruses. I have many that don't.zybch (2008-08-28)
While some keygens DO show up as viruses, there is NO reason for them to do so if they aren't actually infected. Please explain how a small program whos ONLY function should be to generate keys that pass a simple verification check should ever be seen as a virus?
Cracks on the other hand, I can understand as many of they do virus-like things in order to remove protection, but a keygen who's only function is to generate a series of letters/numbers? C'mon, there is no reason whatsoever that they should be detected as iinfected (unless they are deliberately infected).

Viruses can be written in as little as 10k of machine code. actually you can write self-writing code in 5kCallyc01 (2009-07-03)

Noobs, part of downloading keygens is trusting the uploader. Virus scanners give warnings on 50-60% (maybe more) of the keygens out there. I have never gotten a virus from a torrent. Actually, I find it a royal pain in the ass that McAfee quarantines the keygens and I have to go through the hassle to get them out of qarantine. I always read the comments to get a picture if the torrent is waste of time. And if I do get a virus, there is always virus removal software like Trojan Remover, which is constantly available on the Pirate Bay. I ran it last week to make sure I was trojan free, and it did not detect anything. Not bad for downloading keygens all the time.Gr8Writer (2010-12-10)
First of all, thank you to missy_belle for the very useful instructions. I followed them all and had no problems and not have to reinstall at all.Second, the keymaker.exe file does indeed contain a virus -- actually a trojan. It is called Win32:Zany or Backdoor.Win32.Zany.10. You can read more about it here:
http://www.securelist.com/en/descriptions/old47729
As for file size, the Keymaker.exe file is 132KB. Make of that what you will.
Malwarebytes also detects the Keymaker, exe file as Malware.Packer.Gen
You can read more about this here:
http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6132_102-381471.html
As the above link mentions, Malware.Packer.Gen is "a generic detection by MBAM on a file that is packed (archived/compressed) but suspicious or acting as malware or similar." This does NOT necessarily mean that the file is Malware, as it could possibly be a false positive. However, considering that Avast! described it as a backdoor, I'd say it's best not to take any chances.
You could always use the Keygen, then quarantine it so it can't do anything else. I've done that with several keygens and never had a problem.

Thanks missy_belle! I quarantined the keygen after the installation/activation was done just in case.sioux104 (2011-08-26)

Here are the instructions...READ FIRST AND CAREFULLY OR YOU WILL HAVE TO REINSTALL AGAIN!!!
1. Disconnect internet (Turn off modem, router, or wlan)

If you guys are so worried about getting a virus then download VirtualBox, install it, install your windows operating system on your virtual hard drive on VirtualBox, and then open the Keygen in your VirtualBox emulated operating system. If it is a virus then it will only infect your VirtualBox operating system and your virtual hard drive (which is a self contained file on your real hard drive.) and not your main operating system on your PC. If it isn't a virus then you can use the VirtualBox operating system to generate your key without fear of opening it on your main operating system. I find this is usually a good practice if you are unsure about whether or not False Positives are actually false. I've been downloading keygens and cracks for YEARS though and I have gotten hundreds of virus detections on them over time. I have always just disabled my antivirus and ran the file and I've never had a single virus on my computer. Get yourself a good antivirus program and just be smart about what you download. The people that get infected are the people that download a movie and double click it even though it has a .exe extension instead of a video format extension like mp4, mpg, avi, mov, etc. Thank goodness these days Windows has safeguards that let you know you're running a program instead of a movie called User Account Control or UAC for short for all those people that don't really know the ins and outs of using a computer. But even with UAC you still have to read stuff, not just click Next and Allow without reading the warning. The main thing is when you download pirated software you are gambling. You're always at risk of getting caught and you're always at risk of getting infected. Just like having a one night stand with a very attractive stranger you just met that night is a gamble. The chance of being infected the rest of our lives doesn't stop most of us from doing it, we just use a condom. So just think of VirtualBox as a condom. It's a pain in the ass to setup and use but it's a helluva lot better than getting infected. :D Also, one other thing that would be a good idea for you guys is to download the free version of ZoneAlarm's Firewall Software. That way when you run a Keygen on your system that showed up as a false positive the firewall will tell you if the keygen is trying to do things like access processes on your computer, open other files on your computer, or access the internet, and it will stop it from doing those things and ask you whether you want to allow it to do those things or deny it from doing those things. I would say that ZoneAlarm is a good alternative to the VirtualBox solution and requires less effort but even if you go with the VirtualBox solution I would recommend installing ZoneAlarm on your computer anyways because it's always good to have a decent software firewall as well as a decent antivirus. I run ZoneAlarm and Symantec Endpoint Protection together and nothing gets past protection. Also you guys might want to look into the open source program PeerBlock. It will keep you from getting letters in the mail from your ISP about copyright infringement. It's not full proof but it has worked very well for me after getting two letters on two different torrents I got smart and installed it a long time ago and now I have yet to get another letter. :) Hope these suggestions help somebody stay safe while using the World Wide Web.Files:
