Most of the Balkans during the 17th century were under the thumb of the Ottoman empire. Islamic empires have more of a reputation for tolerance than most, but the Ottoman empire was showing its ugliest face during this period in Bulgaria. Bulgaria was a strategically important area inhabited by unreliable Christian subjects. The sultan decided that they must all convert to Islam, or die.

Ottomans had so much tolerance to people who weren't Muslim in every period..Pls do not mislead people about Ottoman..
